134:e653-e699) <strong>&#8220;Importance of Assessing Cardio-respiratory Fitness in Clinical Practice: <em>A Case for Fitness as a Clinical Vital Sign&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3>This Scientific Statement included a comprehensive review of the body of research studies of Cardio-respiratory Fitness as a health measure and care guideline.\u00a0 The Scientific Statement included the following research findings and conclusions regarding <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the importance of Cardio-respiratory Fitness to health and to the practice of medicine<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>The past 2 decades have seen an exponential growth in the number of Studies assessing the association between measures of Cardio-respiratory Fitness, mortality and other health outcomes.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>In a growing number of studies, Cardio-respiratory Fitness has been demonstrated to be a more powerful predictor of mortality risk than traditional risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Low measures<\/span> of Cardio-respiratory Fitness in adults is associated with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">high risk for mortality<\/span>.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Small increases<\/span> in Cardio-respiratory Fitness are associated with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">considerably lower risk<\/span> of an adverse cardiovascular event.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Cardio-respiratory Fitness is a variable that is responsive to therapy.\u00a0 Individuals whose <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cardio-respiratory Fitness increases<\/span> between examinations have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lower risk of adverse health and clinical outcomes.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Of crucial importance is the repeated observation that one does not need to be highly fit to gain benefit from improvement in Cardio-respiratory Fitness.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Physical activity interventions targeting the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">least fit individuals<\/span> will likely have the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">largest health benefit<\/span>.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Non-exercise algorithms<\/span> using readily available clinical variables may provide reasonably accurate estimates of Cardio-respiratory Fitness as compared with Cardio-respiratory Fitness Exercise (CRX) tests.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Non-exercise estimates of Cardio-respiratory Fitness<\/span> may be useful to provide an initial estimate of an individual&#8217;s Cardio-respiratory Fitness, particularly to identify those at increased risk of disease because of a low Cardio-respiratory Fitness measure.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>The evidence reviewed suggests that <strong>the measurement of Cardio-respiratory Fitness improves patient management<\/strong> and that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">its omission from routine clinical practice for the vast majority of patients is unacceptable.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>At a minimum, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all adults should have Cardio-respiratory Fitness estimated each year<\/span> using a non-exercise algorithm during their annual healthcare examination.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A <strong>highlighted copy<\/strong> of the AHA Scientific Statement can be viewed via the following link:<\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/exermetrx.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/AHA-Importance-of-CRF-Dec2016-highlighted.pdf\">AHA-Importance of CRF-Dec2016-highlighted<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Cardio-respiratory Fitness is Important The American Heart Association (AHA) has published a Scientific Statement (Circulation 2016;
